ArcticToday (Aug. 3) reports that “President Donald Trump has told a radio host that a bet on the United States controlling Greenland before the end of his term would be a safe one, the latest sign that his push to acquire the island remains a priority… Asked whether the island remained vital to Western defence, Trump replied: ‘You’ll be right. Greenland’s important from our standpoint. Not from their standpoint. But from our standpoint.’ He added: ‘You should make that bet, actually.’”

Trump’s bullish stance is at odds with Greenland’s Independence Movement, which is growing in popularity in the Danish territory.

Authors James and Lance Morcan devote a chapter to this burgeoning movement in their recent-release book MYSTERIOUS GREENLAND: Frontier of the Breakaway Civilization. In it, they state the following:

At the same time as global superpowers are plotting to take over the autonomous, self-governing Danish territory of Greenland, its humble, yet steadfast Independence Movement is growing in popularity. Many Greenlanders wish to fully break free from Denmark which they view as a colonialist power that conquered them centuries ago.

It’s important to remember Greenland’s Independence Movement pre-dates Trump’s years in the White House by decades…

… in January 2026, the year following the 2025 Greenlandic General Election, a joint statement by Greenland’s party leaders, including the opposition, was made. It stated: “We do not want to be Americans, we do not want to be Danes, we want to be Greenlanders. The future of Greenland must be decided by the Greenlandic people.”
