Fiji is known as ‘the Friendly Isles.’ However, it was once known as ‘the Cannibal Isles’ – and for good reason.

We capture all the history and the violence, the lust, the religious bigotry, the beauty and the clash of cultures that existed in 19th Century Fiji in our adventure-romance Fiji: A Novel.

In the 1800’s, Fiji was a melting pot of cannibals, warring native tribes, sailors, traders, prostitutes, escaped convicts and all manner of foreign undesirables. It’s in this hostile environment our story is set.

Fiji: A Novel is the tale of a young missionary torn between her love for God and for a man in 19th Century Fiji.

An innocent young Englishwoman and a worldly American adventurer are thrown together through circumstance. Susannah wants to convert the native Fijians, Nathan wants to fleece them. It’s a recipe for conflict.

Here’s a brief excerpt from an early chapter of Fiji: A Novel

The young American was well aware of Fiji’s reputation for being a South Sea paradise and a place where a pretty penny could be made. It was now the trading center of the South Pacific. Variously referred to as the Feejee Islands, the Friendly Islands, and the Cannibal Isles, he guessed it was the latter description that was probably the most deserving. He’d been told cannibalism was not only practised by the fierce Fijians, it was rife—as many a white man and the occasional white woman had found to their cost. It hadn’t surprised him to learn that Fijians were constantly at war, and defeated enemies invariably ended up consigned to the cooking pot or, at best, to a lifetime of slavery.

Understanding the bloody history of Fiji had convinced Nathan his latest trading venture couldn’t help but succeed. He knew these natives, like those of North America, lusted after muskets. He’d read that when the musket was introduced, not so long ago, the nature of warfare in Fiji had changed almost overnight, as it had in nearby New Zealand and, indeed, in his homeland. Centuries-old grudges between tribes were being settled once and for all as those who had muskets wreaked vengeance on those who had none; skirmishes in which a few warriors died were being replaced by full-scale battles where hundreds were slaughtered.

Our international thriller novel The Ninth Orphan (The Orphan Trilogy, #1) was seven years in the making. We started writing the manuscript in mid-2004 with literally dozens of rewrites to follow…Those rewrites were driven by doing indepth story analysis after each new draft and most importantly being honest with ourselves. We also sought feedback from other novelists plus experienced figures in the publishing industry. The Ninth Orphan has a complex, layered plot set in various locations all over the world, so we refused to rush it. We knew the story needed a lot of research and thought to completely nail it. After seven years of blood, sweat and tears we were 100% sure we had the perfect spy thriller novel on our hands.

In mid-2011, The Ninth Orphan was finally published (by Sterling Gate Books). It came out in both trade paperback and kindle ebook editions. By December of that year the kindle edition became The #1 Best-Selling Spy Novel on both Amazon.com and Amazon UK. It remained in the spy bestseller list until early 2012 and has been a regular visitor to Amazon’s bestseller lists ever since.

Since then we have written and published the remainder of The Orphan Trilogy, which includes a prequel and a sequel to book one. We have also written a screenplay adaptation of The Ninth Orphan and are now actively developing that feature film under our production company Morcan Motion Pictures. The movie will be filmed in various locations around the world including Paris, London, Chicago and the Philippines.

Plot summary: An orphan grows up to become an assassin for a highly secretive organization. When he tries to break free and live a normal life, he is hunted by his mentor and father figure, and by a female orphan he spent his childhood with. On the run, the mysterious man’s life becomes entwined with his beautiful French-African hostage and a shocking past riddled with the darkest of conspiracies is revealed.

Thanks for all your support!

Magic New Poster for Aussie-Indian Film MY CORNERSTONE

I’ve never paid much attention to Bollywood-style movies aimed at the Indian market until this past year, when I started reading J Hurtado’s reviews here at Twitch (shout-out to Eega). So it’s with a little excitement that I saw the poster for Aussie Indian film My Cornerstone, as I knew I could share it here with an already attuned audience.

Written by enterprising actor James Morcan (the dashing gent in the poster) and directed by Stanley Joseph, My Cornerstone appears to be three movies in one. The poster suggests everything from magic (sorry, illusions) to clones, while the official synopsis suggests a drama:
A young Indian nurse moves to Sydney where she’s placed in the household of a wealthy Indian-Australian family and given the task of caring for an elderly lady.
Meanwhile, the film’s only entry on Wikipedia lists it as a romance. Only time (and possibly, magic) will reveal what truly happens. There’s not much more information online, but we’ll endeavor to bring you updates when we discover more.

NZ actor in Bollywood films

Two quirky romantic comedies explore Hinduism, Christianity and multiculturalism.

Hot off two soon-to-be released Indian-Australian feature films, New Zealand actor James Morcan is looking forward to a well-deserved break.

Not only did Morcan play starring roles in Love You Krishna and My Cornerstone, he also wrote the screenplays which incorporated English and Hindi.

Both films were produced and directed by Indian-Aussie filmmaker Stanley Joseph, of World Pictures Australia, and were inspired by many of Joseph’s own experiences as an Indian migrant in Australia.

They are quirky romantic comedies exploring Hinduism, Christianity and multiculturalism.

In Peter Jackson style, the films were shot simultaneously – a decision which Morcan says nearly broke the production team. “Shooting two movies at once is an extremely rare undertaking and everybody in our incredibly talented crew was stretched to the limit. To be honest, we almost bit off more than we could chew,” says Morcan.

“I probably only averaged three or four hours sleep a night over the last few months,” Morcan (34) says from his residence in Sydney, Australia. “There was literally no time to think. But in a strange way that’s kind of freeing for an actor as you don’t get too cerebral about the process.”

Morcan was actively involved in every single scene of the shoot, working in front of and behind the camera, and wearing multiple hats. “That sort of on-set involvement was tough but necessary to complete the mammoth task. And I learnt so much about the nuts and bolts of filmmaking. In fact, it was like going to film school.”

As for his roles in the films, Morcan is remaining tight-lipped. “Let’s just say I play an enigmatic role in both stories. Other than that I cannot say too much about my characters as they involve big twists in each film. If I mentioned who I actually play in either movie, it would ruin the surprise for the audience.”

Morcan’s previous films have screened at cinemas in Italy, Australia and France. His career highlights include roles in the Australian independent feature film The Pawn and acting alongside Russell Crowe in Ben Hur: The Stadium Spectacular, at Sydney’s Olympic Stadium. He was also executive producer of the recently released New Zealand feature film Desired, which premiered at Cannes Marche du Film in France.

Aside from his film work, Morcan is also a novelist and co-writes with his Bay of Plenty-based father Lance Morcan. The pair have written four published books including the controversial thriller series The Orphan Trilogy and the historical adventure Fiji: A Novel. Their production company, Morcan Motion Pictures, is also developing feature film adaptations of the novels.

Love You Krishna and My Cornerstone were shot in Mumbai, India and NSW, Australia and are currently in post-production. They are expected to be released internationally later this year.

It was a massive job and sleep has been at a premium of late! We just finished the Indian leg of the shoot in Mumbai after filming for two months before that here in Sydney. -James
