James and I would like to wish you and all our valued Followers a Happy New Year and all the best for 2013.

January 2013 marks the launch of The Orphan Uprising, our third book in The Orphan Trilogy. For those who enjoyed books one and two, we predict you’ll love the final instalment in the life of Nine, the ninth-born orphan.

Until the launch, the ‘hard yards’ continue with the current manuscript as we revise, revise, revise. Meanwhile, book one The Ninth Orphan and book two The Orphan Factory are regular visitors to Amazon’s top rated lists in their respective categories and continue to rate highly on that wonderful literary site, Goodreads.com – as does our historical adventure-romance Fiji: A Novel. (A big thank you to our readers!).

Five tips to getting published in 2013

  1. Pick a date when you want to hold a copy of your book. Writing is a process, but publishing is a goal so you need a deadline. And I have found the authors who are successful in self publishing, set a date when they want to hold a copy of their book. Sounds simple, but it is really important.

  2. Decide when is the best time for you to write and make that your routine. I have talked to hundreds of authors and the ones who get to the goal have a discipline about their writing. Most have a better time in the day when they write most productively. What is your best time to write? Do you know when it is? Have you marked out that time on your calendar everyday or most everyday.

  3. Make yourself accountable to help you stay on track. No secret here. Most goals are reached because we have others who help us get there. Find someone to provide encouragement as you write. This could be a friend, a relative or maybe a member of a local or online writers’ group. The Author Learning Center has tools and an online Author Circle that can help.

  4. Select the best publishing path based on your goals, budget and time and talent you have to invest. The Four Paths to Publishing whitepaper can help you understand and evaluate your options. You can download a free copy here.

  5. Plan your book launch event. Just like setting a deadline for holding your book, you want to set a date for a book launch party. Becoming a published author is quite an accomplishment and it is cause for celebration. Be creative. Think about holding it somewhere other an book store. Sell copies of your book and ask those who buy them to go online and write reviews. It will help you build your platform and get word of mouth started.

What really happened at Jonestown in 1978?

From Wiki: Jonestown was the informal name for the Peoples Temple Agricultural Project, an intentional, or planned, residential community in northwestern Guyana formed by the Peoples Temple led by Jim Jones. It became internationally notorious when, on November 18, 1978, 918 people died in the settlement as well as in a nearby airstrip and in Georgetown, Guyana’s capital.

A total of 909 Temple members died in Jonestown, all but two from apparent cyanide poisoning, in an event termed “revolutionary suicide” by Jones and some members on an audio tape of the event and in prior discussions. This includes over 200 murdered children. The poisonings in Jonestown followed the murder of five others by Temple members at a nearby Port Kaituma airstrip. The victims included United States Congressman Leo Ryan. Four other Temple members died in Georgetown at Jones’s command.

To the extent the actions in Jonestown were viewed as a mass murder, it was the largest such event in modern history and resulted in the largest single loss of American civilian life in a non-natural disaster until the events of September 11, 2001.

Well, that’s the official story.

But there have always been rumors of CIA involvement with the cult prior to the massacre. Mind control experiments such as MK-Ultra have also regularly come up in conspiracy theories.

So what really happened in 1978 at Jonestown?

Mass suicide, mass murder, a CIA experiment, or what?

A BOOK on Fiji written by a father and son team is making waves online and cracking Amazon.com’s best selling list over the last couple of weeks.

The book titled Fiji: A Novel was co-authored by Lance Morcan and his son James and was published late last year.

Mr Morcan said he had been inspired by the work of American author James Michener, adding he wanted Fiji to have a story that did justice to its beauty.

Set in the early 1800s, the novel follows protagonists Susannah Drake and Nathan Johnson as the pair travel from Levuka to Momi Bay.

He said the two-year journey to write the novel was a challenging one as he had to co-author long distance with his son.

“He is based in Sydney and I’m based here in New Zealand, so we had to do the whole thing through Skype and emails,” he said.

Mr Morcan said they were both strong-willed which made the writing of the novel an interesting exercise.

He said they were in the process of taking the book to the silver screen.

“James and I are also screenwriters and film producers, and have put Fiji into development as a feature film with our production company, Morcan Motion Pictures,” he added.

Mr Morcan said the book was available at the USP Book Centre, however, they were looking at ways to get more people to access the book.

“We want to put the book in hotels and resorts for them to use as giveaways to their most valued customers and then in this way we can get more locals as well reading the book,” he said.

Critical acclaim for Fiji: A Novel has been pouring in.

Susan M Heim, author and editor of the best-selling Chicken Soup for the Soul series heaped praise on the novel.

“If you’re a fan of adventure, history, even romance, you’ll want to pick up a copy of Fiji: A Novel and brace yourself for the ride,” she said.

“It’s an intense story that will have you turning the pages long into the night.”

Historical author Joan Mcgrath gave the book a four star rating calling it “a wonderfully entrancing read”.
