UK author and reviewer Harry Whitewolf has posted the most insightful review yet of our new release thriller Silent Fear (A novel inspired by true crimes) on the literary site Goodreads.com so we have opted to run it in full – and here it is:

The premise of this book alone is extremely enticing and original, which means my expectations were high from the start, but boy, do the authors deliver!

There are three main facets to this story:

1) It is a whodunnit mystery thriller, where the main protagonist, detective Valerie Crowther tries to track down a serial killer who’s targetting deaf students at a world-renowned university.

2) There is a worldwide virus known as Monkey Flu which is killing hundreds of thousands of people. The U.K has escaped the epidemic until there is a breakout at the very uni Crowther is conducting her investigations, so the school soon becomes quarantined and shut off from the outside world.

3) The story is a great insight into the deaf community.

Combining these three facets makes for an exciting and interesting read. At first, I was a little cautious at embarking on an 800 page story, but I needn’t have worried. It doesn’t feel like a long book at all, and the authors are so adept at breaking up the scenes and the various tangents, and pacing it so well, that I didn’t feel like I was reading a mammoth book at all. I’d thought it would probably take me a couple of months to get through it, but I raced through this in a week. Like all clever and well written thrillers, there are enough cliff-hanging chapters and side stories which made me think I’d just read one more chapter and then before I knew it, I’d read another fifty pages. So don’t let the length of this book put you off at all – it’s exactly the right length that the book needs to be – especially when it’s effectively combining two stories in one (the outbreak of the virus and the whodunnit mystery).

It’s superbly written, and there are plenty of red herrings and clues throughout to make you try to guess who the killer is, only for you to then completely change your mind a few pages later.

There are also plenty of other side stories going on, such as – unexpectedly – Satanic rituals, and the personal stories of the characters. And man, for a book with so many characters (as there needs to be), the authors make it such an easy read to follow who’s who and to have such solid, well-rounded, believeable characters. There are the students – who are a vast array of different types, including some punkish ruffians, there’s the main protagonist Crowther; and her Superintendent ex husband on the outside, there are two news reporters who have bluffed their way into the school and who soon find themselves being quarantined with the rest and becoming the eyes and ears of the media, there are… so many engaging characters with their own stories – and they are all effortlessly portrayed well throughout.

Even the opening scene in the prologue is exceptionally brilliant – it feels like a classic scene from a classic film: where the killer is taking care in bricklaying a wall to conceal his first victim behind it. The attention the killer has to using three parts sand, one part cement and the skill of angling his trowel, with little thought towards the fact that he’s just killed someone in cold blood, is the perfect introduction to a disturbed psychopathic mind. Not to mention that he also then masturbates upon finishing the job.

And knowing that this book is going to be made into a film, I can already see that scene being chillingly played out as clear as mud.

No way will you figure out who the killer is, but you’ll enjoy trying to figure it out. I can guarantee it.

This is such a meaty book, that I could go on for another thousand words detailing just how well it’s all been put together and how well it’s been written, but this review is already turning out to be a long one, so I’ll leave it on this point:

Not only is this a great epidemic-sci-fi and mystery thriller, it’s also a fantastic insight into the deaf community, and it’s very apparent how much research has gone into this book. Reading the afterword from the authors’ consultant makes this clear, and it’s good to know that the writers have gone to lengths to show a very realistic portrayal of that community. Forget the whodunnit and epidemic stories, this book works just as well at being a much needed insight for hearing people into a community we may not know much, or anything, about. As their liaison Brent Macpherson says in the afterword:

“Silent Fear is one of the few mainstream novels to address the unique challenges faced by members of the Deaf community in any great detail. As a member of that community, and as someone who has been Deaf since birth, I believe this book is an important addition to the dearth of literature that exists about Deaf people and Deaf culture.”

Harry Whitewolf is the author of several acclaimed books, including The Road To Purification: Hustlers, Hassles & Hash  and Matrix Visions.

The intriguing topic of underrated scientists has arisen in our Underground Knowledge group’s Fringe science discussion thread, on Goodreads, and members are pulling some interesting names out of the hat.

It started when the group’s co-founder James posted this:

Besides the great Nikola Tesla, here are some other scientists I think deserve more recognition…Please add any more names you feel have influenced our world, or who were ahead of their time and whose scientific ideas are now influencing our future.

Viktor Schauberger

Viktor Schauberger

Viktor Schauberger (30 June 1885 in Holzschlag, Upper Austria[1] – 25 September 1958 in Linz, Austria[1]) was an Austrian forest caretaker, naturalist, philosopher, inventor and biomimicry experimenter. Schauberger developed his own ideas based on what he observed in nature. In Implosion magazine, a magazine released by Schauberger’s family, he said that aeronautical and marine engineers had incorrectly designed the propeller.

Here’s a snapshot of members’ “underrated scientists” picks (abridged):

Buckminster Fuller (aka Richard Buckminster “Bucky” Fuller; July 12, 1895 – July 1, 1983)was an American architect, systems theorist, author, designer and inventor. Fuller published more than 30 books, coining or popularizing terms such as “Spaceship Earth”, ephemeralization, and synergetic. He also developed numerous inventions, mainly architectural designs, and popularized the widely known geodesic dome.

For the best scientist that hardly anyone has ever heard of (I would be extraordinarily surprised if anyone here has): F. E. Volochine. Now, confess – have you heard of him? Why? In 1925 he developed a theory to account for nuclear binding energies, based on magnetism. He predicted the neutron would have a spin of 1/2, and he predicted its magnetic moment quite accurately, and his bonding energies were extremely good, including the excited states.

Top 7 Most Underrated Scientists Ever http://www.debate.org/opinions/polls/…

Interesting that they have Maxwell as highly underrated. I always thought physicists everywhere really rate Maxwell, and Faraday got himself on an English banknote.

How about Benoit Mandelbrot, the creator of fractal geometry? The Fractalist: Memoir of a Scientific Maverick

I would add Kristian Birkeland. He was the first to recognize auroras as electrical currents in plasma.

In the latest poll in our Underground Knowledge discussion group on Goodreads, we are asking members: Is North Korea a genuine threat to world peace? Or is it an exaggerated threat?  Interim results resoundingly show that most Undergrounders believe the threat is exaggerated.

The protagonists…self centred man babies?

Interim results show that 49% believe the North Korea threat’s exaggerated, 31% believe it’s genuine, and 20% are unsure.

Poll respondents’ comments make for interesting reading. Here’s one that caught our eye: “We have two self-centered man babies throwing tantrums and both with mental issues. Not a good combo for the world! It would not surprise me that our Grabber-In-Chief would use a war to try to use it as a diversion from the Russian scandal.”

Here’s a random sample of respondents’ comments from both sides:

Totally exaggerated…if not completely illusory. / NEWSWEEK: WHY THE NORTH KOREA THREAT IS GREATLY EXAGGERATED http://www.newsweek.com/2016/12/30/no… / POLITICAL VETERAN FEARS PROPAGANDA & FALSE FLAG ATTACKS COULD LEAD TO WAR WITH N. KOREA http://www.collective-evolution.com/2… / North Korea’s Exaggerated Threat https://chargedaffairs.org/north-kore

Not really sure but from what I have read on North Korea, it is one crazy dictatorship that has the entire Nation under threat all of the time. Very cruel. And this has been going on for many years under that weird family. I would not be in the least surprised if it was true that they were hoping to fire upon the Western Nations. Regardless of what you think of Trump, it is no excuse to pardon North Korea.

I think both genuine and exaggerated threat.

This threat is very, very real as the result of Obama’s purposeful emasculation of our military and defensive capabilities and the ineptitude of the current Washington Swamp. Americans will not “get it” until Los Angeles or other similar-sized cities have lost several million people in a nuclear attack.

I think Trump is the real threat!!!

They have the right to do as they please in their own country (and it’s totally understandable to want to be stronger and more independent instead of staying under someone else’s mercy). USA needs to f……. chill instead of being such a control freak, who named them gods anyway?? all the problems come from them in the first place…

I would say our (and by our I mean the President’s) over-reactions and lack of diplomacy are a greater threat to world peace. I’m not saying North Korea wouldn’t do anything, but our escalating the situation with rhetoric is ridiculous and not helpful in any way.

…I found multiple ways that devices can be imported by sea. North Korea has demonstrated nuclear bombs that work, and frankly, they don’t need a missile to deliver them… If they sent ten, one would most certainly get through. To me, that is a legitimate threat because it is about attitude, not ability.

Seems like there’s a big financial incentive to invade North Korea then…ala other invasions of mineral-rich foreign lands such as Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, etc, etc.

A genuine threat but to only some regions of the world. However, I do believe much of their threats are just propaganda and rhetoric. But, it only takes one crazy day for the despotic leadership to say, “You know what? Let’s do this.” And, push the button.

Genuine, and the USA continues to make it worse. Constantly claiming you’re number one at everything makes those not number one gun for you. Sadly, South Korea is in the most danger because of Trumps moronic posturing.

Is zero a number? Sounds like a simple enough question, but when posed to fellow ‘Undergrounders’ (members of our Underground Knowledge discussion group on Goodreads) it turns out to be quite complicated.

Image result for zero

Keeping in mind ‘Undergrounders’ are global and from all walks of life, including professionals, academics and blue-collar workers, here’s a snapshot of what they think:

Lisa says: Historically it (zero) did not start out as a number, but as a placeholder (1, 10, 100, 1000, etc.) and to fill in empty columns. But as a human species, we like to complicate things…learning about stuff in more depth….science and shit….we are a bunch of crazies! Zero is not defined. Does it prove the presence of something? Does it prove the absence of something? In a mathematical problem, can you cancel out a zero?

Krishna says: …there r many anomalies in maths regarding 0…but if u see the decimal number system, it’s basically a set of repetitions… 00 to 09, then 10 to 19, and so on and if u see the next set, it’s 100,101,102……111,112……and so on… so here 0 is not treated as anything “special” but treated as other digits only…. so I think 0 is a number….

Harry says: It (zero) existed way before decimal systems. Babylonians (Mayans etc.) first had the concept of zero… “It began to take shape as a number, rather than a punctuation mark between numbers, in India in the fifth century A.D.,” says Robert Kaplan, author of The Nothing That Is: A Natural History of Zero.

Masi says: Zero does have a value, it’s nothing. and it could be expressed as a word, symbol, or figure… (and) Less than zero just means it’s not a whole number, but less than it but it still has value.

James says: Ok, I’ve been converted to The Way of Zero. And fight all those (like Lisa!) who imply Zero is just nothing and not worthy 🙂 Acknowledge equal mathematical rights for Zero! Say no to mathematical discrimination! Yes 9 and 8 are the elite, but zero is a ground hero, forming a grassroots movement…trying to help those less even privileged like -1, -2, -3 etc.

Krishna says: Yes! Zero is our hero!

James says: Krishna, you now belong to the Way of Zero. Here we believe nothing is not nothing. Even if you have nothing, deep down you still got something and therefore you’re a Zero Hero 🙂

Harry says: If we’re actually in a matrix, then zeroes and ones were here long before anything else…. 🙂

Tim says: Zero is represented by a circle that symbolically means nothing, yet, because a circle has no beginning or end, it is eternal. Also, the planets in the sola system are round and are in permanent cycles of the sun and often each other… The circle, or zero, is profound me thinks… 🙂 I love this stuff…

Masi asks: Is infinity a variable? (I’m just asking random questions to make this go somewhere).

James says: This is the zero (nothing) thread, so why does nothing need to go somewhere, Masi?

Lisa says: With zero, the devil is in the details….hence Zero is not really a number, but the name given the very first eternal multiversal being….you can argue both for and against it and be right and wrong all at the same time… It is time to revise the First Law of Thermodynamics. Empty space is full of atoms and therefore DOES NOT consist of nothing.

Tim says: I think zero is an aspect of truth, thus its value is incalculable…

James says: Here’s a song about zero by the little known 1980s Scottish indie rock band TV21 https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-htBdwn
