It’s the Golden Age for writers right now, according to Author Solutions – the indie book writers’ blog

Fellow writers, don’t despair. As this must-read blog just out from Author Solutions shows: the timing has never been better for writers. Read on…

Charles Dickens began his classic novel, A Tale of Two Cities with the line, “It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.” Depending on your point of view and current position, that line might  describe what is happening in publishing today. For authors, it really is the best of times because there are more ways to get published than ever before. If you work in traditional publishing, you might think it is the worst of times as the industry goes through a transformation similar to what has already taken place in the film and music industries.

Over the weekend, I read an article by Stephen Marche in Esquire magazine where he offers that this is the absolute best time in history to be a writer. His opening statement declares that writers are whiners, but right now they have nothing to complain about.  To read the complete article, you will have to pick up a copy of the magazine on the newsstand, because it is not online yet, but here are few of the key reasons for his claim.

  1. Celebrity authors command more money than ever before. J.K. Rowling is a billionaire. Tom Wolfe got $7 million for his last book. By contrast, Charles Dickens total earnings in present value was around $10 million.
  2. Small presses are putting out more good books than ever before. In 2010, the National Book Award and the Pulitzer for fiction went to small publishers.
  3. Self-publishing has lost its stigma. Books like 50 Shades of Grey have helped demonstrate authors can take control of their own publishing futures and generate great results.
  4. It’s not just the novel. Essays are making a comeback as well. Good writers can use blogs and online content hubs like the Huffpost to practice their craft and get read.
  5. The e-reader is creating a new market, not destroying an old one.  People with e-readers read more books than people who don’t have the devices, and on average American adults read seventeen books in 2011. That number has never been higher since it started being tracked in 1990.

In summary,  Marche suggests that we are in the midst of a massive rebirth of reading which means there is more opportunity for writers. His closing line in the article says, “The whining by writers is not just untrue; it’s becoming embarrassingly untrue. New advice: Be grateful. Revel.”

Now that Amazon have added Japan to their ever-growing list of sites to carry Kindle ebooks, our novels are finally available to Japanese readers!

This brings to seven sites internationally, including Japan, that the digital versions of our novels are selling in – the others being the US (also serves India and Canada), Germany, France, Italy and Spain.

Unsurprisingly, the early signs from the Land of the Rising Sun are that of all three of our published novels, Japanese readers are most interested in our international thriller, The Ninth Orphan (The Orphan Trilogy, #1). Not surprising given a prominent sub-plot in this novel concerns Yamashita’s Gold.

Yamashita’s Gold, also referred to as Yamashita’s Treasure, is the name given to the alleged war loot stolen in Southeast Asia by Japanese forces during World War II and hidden in caves, tunnels and underground complexes in the Philippines. It is named for the Japanese general Tomoyuki Yamashita, nicknamed “The Tiger of Malaya”.

With national polls in the US presidential elections showing a neck-and-neck race, Romney was in Florida, Virginia, and New Hampshire, while Obama was trying to protect Wisconsin from an eleventh-hour challenge from the GOP before heading to Iowa. And that’s where the two campaigns believe the race will be decided, according to Associated Press.

The report continues:

And in an indication of just how all-important Ohio was once again to the future occupancy of the White House, both candidates planned to be on the ground in Columbus Monday evening for dueling rallies seven miles apart.

Whoever wins Ohio has a simpler path to amass the 270 electoral votes needed to claim the presidency. With Obama showing a lead in most polls of the state’s likely voters, Romney voiced guarded optimism Sunday in Cleveland, saying Obama’s re-election is “possible, but not likely.”

A final national NBC/Wall Street Journal Poll showed Obama getting the support of 48 percent of likely voters, with Romney receiving 47 percent. A Washington Post-ABC News tracking poll had Obama at 49 and Romney at 48. A Pew Research Center poll released Sunday showed Obama with a 3-point-point edge over Romney, 48 percent to 45 percent among likely voters.

However, the question remains: Does the election result really matter? Has a US election result mattered since the Kennedy era?

We attempt to answer these questions in our international thriller novels, The Ninth Orphan (The Orphan Trilogy, #1), and The Orphan Factory (The Orphan Trilogy, #2) and shed some light on who wields the real power in today’s world…

Romney vs Obama…Does the result really matter?

As the US presidential elections race enters its final days, Romney still has the tougher path, according to CNN who report: “He must win more of the nine most-contested states to reach 270 electoral votes: Ohio, Florida, Virginia, North Carolina, Colorado, Nevada, Wisconsin, Iowa and New Hampshire.”

Quoting Associated Press, the report continues:

Romney has added Pennsylvania to the mix, hoping to end a streak of five presidential contests where the Democratic candidate prevailed in the state. Obama won Pennsylvania by more than 10 percentage points in 2008; the latest polls in the state give him a 4- to 5-point margin…

…The final frenzy of campaigning comes in the wake of Superstorm Sandy that has dominated much of the news coverage for the past several days as New York, New Jersey and Connecticut recover from the brunt of its force…

…In crucial early voting, Obama holds an apparent lead over Romney in key states. But Obama’s advantage isn’t as big as the one he had over John McCain four years ago, giving Romney hope that he could make up that gap in Tuesday’s election…

…Several battleground states are releasing the party affiliation of people who have voted early. So far, Democratic voters outnumber Republicans in Florida, Iowa, Nevada, North Carolina and Ohio. Republicans have the edge in Colorado.

Book Review: The Ninth Orphan, by James and Lance Morcan

A few months ago, I had the opportunity to review a very enjoyable book by the father/son writing team, James and Lance Morcan, called Fiji: A Novel. So, I was very excited when I had the opportunity to review another novel by this duo: The Ninth Orphan. This psychological thriller really kept me on the edge of my seat!
The Ninth Orphan is the story of Sebastian, more commonly called Nine because he is the ninth of twenty-three children who were raised and trained apart from natural parents to become elite members of a super-secret spy agency. Nine is exceptionally gifted at the spy game and plays it well, but when he reaches the age of 31, he decides he wants to lead a “normal” life, away from the intrigue and secrecy of the world of espionage. Unfortunately, his employer, the Omega Agency, doesn’t support his decision, and it becomes a cat-and-mouse game when Nine implements his plan to break away from the agency.
Along the way, we learn that Nine is a master of disguise as he adeptly uses makeup and various costumes to transform himself into people that the other agents are unlikely to recognize. Nine also picks up a reluctant hostage along the way — a beautiful Frenchwoman named Isabelle — who becomes more and more bonded to Nine as their perilous journey unfolds. Will Nine and Isabelle ever be able to elude their pursuers and create a new life on the peaceful island that Nine has acquired?
I couldn’t stop reading this book filled with plenty of action and mystery, so I was happy to learn that The Ninth Orphan is part of a trilogy, which includes a prequel — The Orphan Factory — and a sequel (to come) — The Orphan Uprising. The Ninth Orphan is available now as a paperback and eBook. I hope you’ll pick up a copy today!
Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book for review purposes. All opinions are 100% my own. This post contains affiliate links.

CNN asks – Can elections be blown off course by natural disasters?

Quoting John T. Gasper, of the Carnegie Mellon University, CNN reports:

Gasper says Superstorm Sandy’s proximity to election day makes its impact more unpredictable – and that the fortunes of Romney and Obama are likely to be swayed more by how they are seen to respond to the crisis than by the realities of the situation.

“It’s a great PR event to show your constituents that you are there to help them,” he told CNN.

Though neither candidate wants to be seen playing politics with this storm, if there’s any advice for Obama and Romney in their final week, it’s surely: roll your sleeves up and smile for the camera.

However, the question remains: Does the election result really matter? Has a US election result mattered since the Kennedy era?

News Release: 1500hrs, 31 Oct., 2012 PST:

New Zealand-born author and former Waterstones bookseller James Morcan has had the pleasure of seeing his international thriller novel, The Ninth Orphan, rise overnight into Amazon’s Top 20 Bestseller List for Technothrillers.

James says he drew on his invaluable UK experience.

James, who is based in Sydney, Australia, co-authored the novel with his father Lance, who is based in New Zealand. Together, the prolific father-and-son writing team have co-authored three novels, all published by Down Under publishing company Sterling Gate Books.

The Ninth Orphan has been described by one reviewer as “a high-octane thriller with an edge”. Merging fact with fiction, it fits the current trend toward stories about shadow organizations rumoured to exist in the real world.

While the novel takes readers on a trip around the globe, most of the action takes place on either side of the English Channel. London locations include Heathrow International Airport, Hyde Park, Kensington and South Kensington, the East End and the MI5 headquarters. Other UK settings include the historical St. Michael’s Mount, in Cornwall.

James says he was able to draw on his UK work experience – gained while with Waterstones’ Old Brompton Road branch, in South Kensington.

“That experience was invaluable in scoping the novel,” he says. “British readers in particular seem to resonate with the London and UK scenes.”

James says Britain’s connection with Japanese-plundered World War Two treasure – commonly referred to as Yamashita’s Gold – is highlighted in the novel, and that has also intrigued readers.

“That was a little-known event involving trillions of pounds worth of stolen gold. Fearing Germany was going to invade, Britain shipped the bulk of its gold reserves, including the Royal Family’s massive stockpile, to Singapore. When Singapore suddenly fell to the Japanese in 1942, Britain lost nearly all of its gold supplies overnight. This makes for an interesting sub-plot in our novel.”

The Morcans, who are also film producers, have put The Ninth Orphan into development as a feature film with their production company, Morcan Motion Pictures.

The novel is the first book in The Orphan Trilogy. Book two, The Orphan Factory, was published recently; meanwhile, book three is scheduled for release in 2013.
