Hi all, I have been working on this book-film creative project ever since lockdowns began in early 2020…This has been my attempt to make sense of, or mentally process, our strangely altered reality…

And I’m feelin’ blessed to be working with New York actor/rapper Andre Doc Williams who starred in and wrote the music for this promo of our film Anno 2020…

La Rivers, Shaun Huff, Dilia Corujo, Adryanna Elmendorf and Sharod Giles also star in the Rochester, NY plot.

This Rochester section is one of half a dozen plots set all over the world in this beast of a production I’m directing – and which is based on my recently published novel. As the title suggests, Anno 2020 is set during last year’s global meltdown and explores intense relationships in this chaotic and uncertain period of time.

I’m also very grateful to have other award-winning actors including Australian cast members Erin Connor (Occupation, Dino King 3D), Greg Poppleton (Narnia, Moulin Rouge), Brett Partridge (Water Rats) and Audrey Nitschke (who I highly recommend if anyone needs a child actor). Plus Americans Kevin Scott Allen, Sheila Ball and Jessica Castello, Israeli Lital Luzon and Italian Adriana Moccia.

The entire cast has been pushed to their absolute limit as the rare performance style we are employing is emotionally raw, semi-improvisational and mostly shot via close-ups…And each actor is also bravely infusing their own real-life experiences that evolve their characters into something very genuine, almost like a docu-drama.

Simon Carter is our director of photography – and inspires me every day with his ideas and enthusiasm for the story.

And my long-time Sydney-based collaborator Gil Ben-Moshe, of MoneyShot Productions, is lead producer and is also one of our main actors. And I must say it’s wonderful to work with an actor/producer who is very respectful of all involved and trusts a director’s storytelling process – so thanks for your faith in me, Gil!

We are 80% thru shooting Anno 2020 and will soon be in post. Our whole team appreciates your support!

Thanks,

James Morcan

Book review of Anno 2020:

News Release: November 23, 2017 — New Zealand-based film production company Morcan Motion Pictures announced this week production of one of the films on its development slate received a boost with the successful international release of the crime-thriller Silent Fear (A novel inspired by true crimes).

Silent Fear (A novel inspired by true crimes)

Book’s launch a success.

Co-authored by father-and-son writing team Lance and James Morcan, Silent Fear  has attracted critical acclaim since its launch as a paperback and Kindle ebook on Amazon.

Amazon Top 500 reviewer Susan Elliot describes it as “A riveting crime novel.” Elliot writes, “There is so much to like about this book: the plot, the pace and the characters all came together in the most riveting crime novel that I’ve read in a long time.” She warns readers, “Do not read it on a train. You may just miss your station.”

Amazon Australia Top 50 reviewer Todd Simpson describes Silent Fear  as “Simply Splendid.” Simpson writes, “There is so much to love about this entertaining and well written murder mystery…Hands down this is a wonderful book, and well worth a read.”

The Morcans, who are adapting their novel to a feature film screenplay, added Silent Fear  to their production company’s development slate several years ago.

A spokesperson for the company says development of the planned feature film was delayed to accommodate the release of the novel. “That proved to be a wise decision,” he says, “given the interest the book is now generating for the movie.”

Set in a university in London, Silent Fear  was inspired by the true-life murders of students at Gallaudet University, one of the world’s premiere learning institutions for the deaf and hard of hearing, in Washington, D.C. It was written under the guidance of Brent Macpherson, one of the world’s leading deaf storytellers working in film, television and other creative mediums. Macpherson is also co-producer on the film adaptation.

The premise of Silent Fear  sees Scotland Yard detective Valerie Crowther being assigned to investigate the murder of a student at a university for the deaf in the upmarket Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. The investigation coincides with a deadly flu virus outbreak, resulting in the university being quarantined from the outside world. When more Deaf students are murdered, it becomes clear there is a serial killer operating within the sealed-off university. A chilling cat-and-mouse game evolves as the unknown killer targets Valerie and the virus claims more lives.

A sequel is planned with more books in the series a possibility.

James Morcan says interest in the planned movie has already been received from film industry contacts. Speaking from Sydney, Australia, where he is based, he says the novel was crying out to be adapted because the storyline is very suited to the big screen.

“Silent Fear is a multi-genre story that has proven appeal to fans of the crime, mystery, thriller, horror, romance and sci-fi genres,” he says. “It’s exactly what movie-goers are looking for. However, we are under no illusions how difficult it is to greenlight movies so we will be aligning ourselves with a major producer to get it across the line.”

The Morcans invite expressions of interest from experienced producers.

Meanwhile, they have posted a trailer to promote the book and film on YouTube. It can be viewed at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8bv1vbQxYo

Silent Fear  is the Morcans’ eighth novel to be published under the Sterling Gate Books banner. Their other books include the international thriller series The Orphan Trilogy, and the historical adventures Into the Americas  and White Spirit – both based on true stories – and Fiji.

Above is a poster for the dystopian adventure movie After Armageddon which I recently finished filming.

Logline: Two men, who are polar opposites, must come to terms with being the last two humans on Earth in a post-Apocalyptic world.

The film was directed by my long-time collaborator and buddy Stanley Joseph (pictured directing me in a rock-climbing scene ABOVE) and my lead co-star was one of Australia’s great actors Berynn Schwerdt of Wyrmwood fame (pictured BELOW).

Stanley Joseph’s production company (World Pictures Australia) produced the film which we shot in rural NSW, Australia.

My good friend and versatile actor Gil Ben-Moshe (pictured BELOW far left) also features in the main cast.

After Armageddon is now in post-production and being edited. It will be released in cinemas later this year.

To create an intense realism, we shot the movie in a spontaneous fashion and about 90% of the dialogue was completely ad-libbed. This free-flow acting approach was partially inspired by Marlon Brando’s groundbreaking improvisational performances of the 1970s including The Godfather, The Last Tango in Paris and Apocalypse Now.

Stanley Joseph’s style of directing is also very improvisational and he came up with quite a few additional scenes/sequences on set which were not in the original screenplay. Stanley designed the shoot to be an extremely creative storytelling/acting experience – the only problem was this unique style stretched our cinematographer to the absolute limit (see below!)

Noel Evans (pictured BELOW on the left) was our cinematographer and did an amazing job under pressure. In fact, Noel was probably under the most pressure of any of us and I am in awe of just how hard cinematographers work.

I’m very pleased to announce that our multicultural, international romantic comedy My Cornerstone (starring Miss India Australia beauty pageant-winner Zenia Starr pictured above) will complete its 2nd week of cinema screenings this evening. There have been over 150 cinema screenings Australia-wide in the first two weeks alone and the feedback we have received from audiences and film critics alike has been overwhelmingly positive. So thank you to all who attended screenings at cinemas in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide during its first week.

Due to public demand in Sydney’s Eastern suburbs we have booked the classy Ritz Cinema (Event Cinemas) at Randwick for daily screenings beginning late October (Friday 31st) until Sunday November 2nd. http://www.ritzcinema.com.au/Movie/My-Cornerstone

Meanwhile the film continues to show in selected Event Cinemas and Village Cinemas in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

Beyond Australia, it will then release in selected markets internationally starting with India-wide cinema screenings before the end of this year.

Thank you so much for all your support.

See you at the movies!

James Morcan
